In 1987, Jackie Chan ruled the Top 10 Hong Kong box office with two movies including Armour of God <龍兄虎弟> and Project A II <A計劃續集>. The former, of course, became the highest-grossing Hong Kong movie at the time with a then-astounding HK$35.4 million.

Believe it or not, it has been five years since Tsui Hark last directed a Detective Dee movie. That movie in question was Young Detective Dee: Rise Of The Sea Dragon <狄仁杰之神都龙王>, the prequel that reintroduced the title character by replacing Andy Lau from the first movie with Taiwanese-Canadian actor Mark Chao.

Young Detective Dee: Rise of The Sea Dragon 狄仁杰之神都龙王 (2013) Review
Instead of a direct sequel to 2010’s Detective Dee And The Mystery Of The Phantom Flame <狄仁傑之通天帝國>, co-writer and director Tsui Hark dialled back down a notch by going the prequel route. He even recast Andy Lau’s titular role with a younger lead played by Mark Chao, the Taiwanese-Canadian actor best known in Monga <艋舺> and Black & White Episode 1: The Dawn Of Assault <痞子英雄>.

Detective Dee And The Mystery Of The Phantom Flame 狄仁傑之通天帝國 (2010) Review
During the long stretch in the 2000s, Tsui Hark’s so-called comeback movies ranging from 2001’s The Legend Of Zu <蜀山傳> and 2005’s Seven Swords <七劍> to 2008’s Missing <深海尋人> and All About Women <女人不坏> were all heavily hyped but fell short of their intended targets. Frankly, his last best movie back then was 2000’s Time And Tide <順流逆流>, and his directing effort has never been recovered ever since.
